Day 3: Zell Am See - Lienz, Austria

(Driving day 2: 251 km/112 miles)

Welcome to one of the highlights of this extraordinary tour! Departing from Zell am See, head south towards one of Europe’s most renowned motorcycle routes, the Großglockner Hochalpenstraße. This iconic road takes you deep into the heart of Hohe Tauern National Park, leading you towards the towering peak of Großglockner (3798m) and the majestic Pasterze Glacier. Brace yourself for an extraordinary riding experience along this 48 km winding road, featuring 36 exhilarating turns and an elevation difference of 2504 meters. Due to the altitude, temperatures may drop significantly, even during the summer months. Take advantage of several stops along the way to immerse yourself in the awe-inspiring scenery of towering mountains and pristine glaciers.

Continuing your journey through the valley via Heiligenblut, you’ll encounter more stunning landscapes and roads. We highly recommend a brief detour across the border into Italy to discover a hidden gem: the Plöcken Pass. This twisting and steep road appears as though it’s cascading down the mountainside, with small tunnels and sections seemingly suspended in the air to accommodate the turns. This unforgettable experience is a true bucket list item for any motorcycle enthusiast. Afterward, follow the picturesque curvy roads along the Italian border before crossing back into Austria and reaching your hotel in Lienz.

The scenery here is untamed and utterly captivating! Take a break in Cortina for lunch, immersing yourself in the charm of the town and preparing for the series of small mountain passes that lie ahead.

Your adventure continues southward, where you’ll encounter Passo Falzarego, offering the option to ascend to the mountaintop via cable car (though this will extend your journey by over 2 hours). Journey through a picturesque valley, filled with ample opportunities for breathtaking photos. Then, brace yourself for a unique experience as you cross Passo Fedaia, driving through a dam and enjoying a close encounter with Mount Marmolada (3,342 m).

As your journey progresses, you’ll traverse a string of mountain passes like pearls on a necklace: Passo Sella, Passo Gardena, Passo Campolongo, and Passo Pordoi. Its picturesque harbor, adorned with palm trees, boasts a delightful array of cafes and restaurants, while the narrow streets leading from the beautiful city square are lined with modern shops. The weekly market adds to the city’s allure, drawing locals and visitors alike.

Pebble-covered beaches adorn both sides of the city, inviting strolls and tranquil moments by the water. Lake Garda and its surrounding area, characterized by a mild climate and charming villages against the backdrop of snow-capped Alps peaks, have long captivated travelers seeking respite from northern climates. Here, amidst the breathtaking landscape, visitors immerse themselves in the warmth of southern culture, savoring delectable cuisine and embracing the rich folklore. Discover the largest lake in Italy, where sheer cliff walls adorn the northwest side, while villages with distinctive brick roofs and elegant cypress trees grace the southeastern shore.

(Driving day 6: 252 km/156 miles)

Prepare to once again traverse breathtaking mountain passes, including roads that Top Gear unofficially dubbed the world’s best driving route. Your journey begins amidst varied natural landscapes, with majestic mountains surrounding you, as you ascend via Passo Pennes (Penserjock) and over Passo Giovo (Jaufenstrasse), culminating in the region’s highest peak, Passo Stelvio (Stilfserjock).

At an elevation of 2,757 meters above sea level, Passo Stelvio stands as the second-highest pass in the Alps, surpassed only by the Col de IÍseran in France. Renowned for its 60 hairpin turns winding up the mountainside, this stretch of road is not only spectacular but also steeped in history, having hosted stages of the Giro de Italia.

On this driving day, utmost concentration and composure are essential. Be prepared for fluctuating weather conditions and temperatures, as temperatures can dip below zero, even in the height of summer. While the journey may present challenges, it promises to be an exhilarating and rewarding experience for those ready to embrace the adventure.

9

Day 9: Livigno - Andermatt, Switzerland

(Driving day 7: 360 km/223 miles)

Prepare for an early start today, as you’ll be covering a longer stretch than usual. Day 10: Andermatt, Switzerland

(Resting day or driving day 8: 261 km/162 miles)

Today offers the opportunity to explore the surrounding passes of Andermatt, traversing warm valleys and high-altitude, chilly mountain passes. As you cross the border into Italy, you’ll encounter Passo Della Novena and Nufenenpass, characterized by smoother roads and fewer hairpin turns. Continue your journey to Grimsel Pass, where you’ll be treated to a spectacular view of the road snaking up the mountainside. Next, traverse over Sustenpass before returning to Andermatt for a well-deserved lunch break.

In the afternoon, head westward to Furka Pass before crossing back into Italy to drive Passo Della Novena, Nufenenpass, and St. Gotthard Pass once more. We believe the St. Gotthard Pass offers such a remarkable experience that it’s worth riding in both directions. This marks the last mountain pass of the tour before you return to Andermatt, concluding your unforgettable journey through the breathtaking Alpine landscape.
